'Stairway to Heaven' hikers cited for trespassing
2 hikers spent the night on the trail
Honolulu police say the two hikers who spent the night on the "Stairway to Heaven" trail were cited for trespassing.
A 32-year-old Florida man and a 25-year-old woman from the mainland spent the night on the trail after fire crews tried to rescue them Thursday.
They started the hike Thursday evening on the Moanalua side of the Koolaus, but got stuck near the "Stairway."
When fire rescue crews arrived Friday morning, the hikers came down the Haiku Stairs themselves. That's when the hikers were cited.
The Honolulu Fire Department got the call just after 7 p.m. Thursday, but suspended the rescue due to the weather and wires near the hikers' location.
The hikers were not injured.
The Navy built the stairs during World War II to access radio equipment at the mountain summit.
The trail isn't maintained and is officially closed to the public.
