HONOLULU -

Fresh off a flight from Washington, gearing up on the USS Missouri, 11 year old Carl Hess prepared for the mission he dreamed up.

"I Carl Hess, being appointed a first Lt. in the US. Army," he began to recite onboard the USS Missouri.

"Well, there's so much to learn about World War II and I wanted something unique that nobody has ever done before," he told a small cluster of news crews.

"It's just kind of celebration of Carl. He's had to fight through a lot of pills and shots," said Carl's dad James Sullivan.

Carl was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation he was able to realize his dream, and his family soon found out, Carl sure can dream!

"His big thing is that no one else did it and he wouldn't be able to do it otherwise. I think he hit the nail on the head,” said Sullivan.

"I heard something about a secret mission," asked KITV reporter Lara Yamada.

"Yeah. That's all I know too," said Carl.

"He doesn't know what to say most of the time. He's like, 'I get to do what? Where am I going? I'm sleeping where?' He doesn't know what's going on for the rest of the wish," said Dr. Jeremy Edwards, who is a pediatric doctor and board member on the Make a Wish Foundation.

On this mission Lt. Carl Hess has his own unit.

He will hang with the crew on the USS Missouri, catch a ride with a pilot, and then land on a remote beach.

He is surviving his dream, after surviving so much more.

"It's amazing. It's a real honor to be able to be here and do all of this with all these people," said Carl.

"It's cool to see him excited. It's cool to see him smile again. He's ready for his survival mission for sure," said his dad.

Everything has been geared toward World War II, which is one of Carl's favorite subjects, including a 1943 jeep and a Stearman Bi-Plane.

His crew is part of a group of Marines that volunteered to make Carl's dream come true.
