BIG ISLAND, Hawaii -

A 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark while surfing on the Big Island.

The teenager was riding waves at Dead Trees surf spot near the Pohoiki boat launch when those in the water with him saw a gray shark about 8 feet long.

"He was coming down the wave and the shark came by the side and took him out by the leg. All I saw was red from there and I tried to come and help him but I was too late. He was already by the shore, I couldn't cope, I was shaking, I was so close to a shark attack," said witness Issac Belisario.

Witnesses say at least four people nearby rushed to help the teenager. First responders gave him aide as fire departments helicopter crews scanned the ocean to spot the shark.

"I put a tourniquet under the leg to stop the bleeding," said witness Elgin Santos.

Officials say the boy was transported to the hospital with multiple lacerations and puncture wounds.
