Just a couple weekends left before school starts up again ... So those end-of-summer potlucks will start firing up! Don't say goodbye to summer with a barbeque that makes everyone sick! KITV4's Ashley Moser sets the table for some healthy eats! .. It's all new at 6. Nothing says summer better than food on the grill. nat sizzle But nothing can turn a great barbeque into a terrible barbeque like a meal that makes everyone sick! Food safety experts warn undercooked and mishandled meat are usually the culprits. Just last year the Hawaii State Department of Health reported 348 cases of Salmonella. 321 cases of the norovirus. And 30 cases of e-coli. Illnesses that food safety experts say can be avoided with 4 tips. First -- you're hands MUST BE CLEAN! If you're barbequing outside - hand washing sinks may not be readily available. Erin 14:46 "FAMILIES CAN BRING A HAND SANITIZER TO SAY WASH THEIR HANDS BEFORE HANDLING THE FOOD." 14:53 And no touching raw or even cooked meats directly. Erin 17:16 "IT WOULD BE BEST TO USE UTENSILS INSTEAD OF YOUR HANDS TO HANDLE THE FOOD." 17:23 Second tip -- bring extra utensils and pans. It's the number one way to prevent cross contamination. Erin 15:07 "A LOT OF FAMILIES WILL MARINATE THE MEATS THE NIGHT BEFORE, BRING IT TO THE PARK, BARBEQUE. AND MAYBE BRING JUST THAT PAN THEY BROUGHT THE MARINATED MEATS IN -- NOT THINKING OF WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO PUT THE COOKED MEATS." 15:22 Now that you're hands are clean and you have enough cooking tools - you're ready to start preparing your food. IF THEY HAVE HAMBURGERS THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE IT'S COOKED THROUGH WHERE THEY NO LONGER SEE PINK." 23:57 Here are the temps you need to hit: Beef and steaks: 145 degrees Hot dogs and sausages Hamburger and ground meats 155 degrees Chicken and all poultry 165 degrees And Fish at 145 degrees Tip 4 - Be sure to bring extra ice to the beach to cool those leftovers.
