About 100 Honolulu firefighters have responded to a large brush fire in Upper Makakilo that broke out Friday.
Fire officials say 20 homes are being threatened on Palehua Road. At least 10 homes were evacuated by 6 p.m.
Honolulu Fire Department has stationed one fire company per house to protect the neighborhood. Officials say wind is a challenge, especially with large trees surrounding the homes.
Residents are asked to the keep streets clear and be cautious of emergency vehicles and operations near Umena and Kikaha Streets.
The city and the American Red Cross have opened an emergency shelter for affected Makakilo residents at Makakilo Community Park located at 92-1140 Makakilo Drive.
