IT MAY BE ONE OF THE LAST HOOPS WOMEN HAVE YET TO BREAK THROUGH... COACHING BOYS TEAMS. BUT THAT'S THE CASE FOR CLEARWATER-ORCHARD BASKETBALL... THEIR HEAD COACH IS A WOMAN. AND THEY'VE MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE BOYS STATE TOURNAMENT IN LINCOLN. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN'S ANDREW OZAKI HAS A STORY... YOU'LL SEE ONLY ON SEVEN. YOU HAVE TO LOOK PRETTY CLOSE TO SEE THE CYCLONES FROM CLEARWATER ORCHARD ARE NOT YOUR "ORDINARY" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AT STATE TOURNAMENT.( nat snd: Here we go boys. ) THAT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE LEAD BY A FEMALE HEAD COACH.( NAT SND: Head coach Shelly Mlnarik, cheers ) WHILE THERE ARE PLENTY OF WOMEN COACHES... FEW COACH MALE TEAMS. AND FEWER HAVE HAD THE SUCCESS SHELLY MLNARIK (MIN AIR ICK) HAS ACHIEVED. SHE IS THE FIRST WOMEN TO TAKE A BOYS TEAM ALL THE WAY TO THE NEBRASKA STATE SEMIFINALS IN ALMOST 90 YEARS.( Dale Martin: Once you see how things go and see how she coaches you forget about her being a male or female. She's just a coach. ) AND TOUGH COACH ACCORDING TO THE SCHOOL'S SUPERINTENDENT WHO'S SON IS ON THE TEAM.( Martin: If they do something wrong, she'll call them on it. Get them back on track. )( nat snd: Josh stay home! ) THAT'S THE WAY SHE HAS COACHED FOR 20 YEARS... TAKING GIRLS TEAMS TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT A COUPLE OF TIMES. BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN THE EIGHT YEARS OF COACHING BOYS HER TEAM AS MADE IT TO LINCOLN.( nat snd: Get there! ) NO ONE PROUDER THAN HER HUSBAND.( Ted Mlnarik: Very proud. It's been a fun few years since she been coaching. Yeah it's been a good time. ) MLNARIK COMES FROM A BASKETBALL FAMILY.. SHE WAS STAR PLAYER IN HIGH SCHOOL ... EACH OF HER THREE SISTERS WERE ON STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS.( Lisa Hedstrom: She's got so much heart and that flows through to the players. ) AND THAT'S MLNARIK POINT OF VIEW... ( Shelly Mlnarik: I'm doing what I love to do. And I've got a great bunch of kids that I get to coach and I guess that's where my focus is. ) DOWN PLAYING BREAKING BARRIERS OR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING GIRLS OR BOYS.( Shelly Mlarick: Beside from the fact boys don't smell as nice as girls do but the guy's game is obviously a faster paced game which I really like. ) AND EVEN IN DEFEAT... HER PLAYERS CONTINUED TO FIGHT...AND SCRAP. A REFLECTION OF THEIR COACH.( Mlarick: They are workers and they are going to keep fighting and that's kind of what I pride them in they do a great job they are not going to quit they are going to keep battling. ) IN LINCOLN, KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN. CLEARWATER OCHARD WILL PLAY IN THE CONSULATION ROUND TOMORROW. AND THE CYCLONES MAYBE A FORCE FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS. ONLY ONE OF THE STARTING 5 IS A SENIOR.
