DISCOVERING WITH DRONES. RECENTLY, ARCHEOLOGISTS FOUND A VILLAGE -- 1-THOUSAND YEARS OLD -- RIGHT HERE IN NEW MEXICO. NEW TONIGHT... KOAT ANCHOR TODD KURTZ SHOWS YOU HOW THEY DID IT. ARCHEOLOGISTS RECENTLY USED THIS DRONE TO UNEARTH AN ANCIENT VILLAGE IN NORTHWEST NEW MEXICO. DR. JOHN KANTNER -- It has really revolutionized the kinds of work that we can do. LOOK AT THESE PICTURES -- ON THE RIGHT IS WHAT WE SEE FROM ABOVE -- TO THE LEFT IS THE INFRARED IMAGE CAPTURED BY THE DRONE AND THE MIDDLE BREAKS DOWN WHAT'S UNDER THE SURFACE. SANTA FE NATIVE, AND CURRENT UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA PROFESSOR DR. JOHN KANTNER MADE THE DISCOVERY. HE HAS BEEN STUDYING THE ANCESTORS OF TODAY'S PUEBLO PEOPLE FOR 2 DECADES. DR. JOHN KANTNER -- even though I had been working this area for so long, I didn't know some of this was below the surface. TODD KURTZ STAND UP -- this is where dr. kantner has been working -- Chaco Canyon -- About a 3 hour drive from Albuquerque. There have been a lot of archeological discoveries here -- but this new development likely wouldn't have been found. DR. JOHN KANTNER -- there's a lot of wind blown soils that have come in and buried a lot of the remains so it would be impossible for me to detect what's a couple of meters below the surface. AND MOST IMPRESSIVE, FINDING THIS VILLAGE TOOK A COUPLE OF HOURS. THE BIG QUESTION NOW.... IS WHAT DO THEY DISCOVER NEXT? TK KA7N. THE NEXT STEP, WOULD BE FOR A TEAM TO EXCAVATE THE VILLAGE.
