The Hawaii Department of Education has announced that Kahaluu Elementary School has been evacuated due to a noxious odor Thursday afternoon.
The announcement was made on Twitter at around 12:19 p.m.
The school closed for the day at around noon.
School officials notified the Honolulu Fire Department of a suspicious odor in the area around 11:15 a.m. HFD is working with the City Department of Environmental Services and the State Department of Health to identify the source of the odor.
About 31 students and staff reported feeling symptoms of nausea, according to Emergency Medical Services personnel who were on-site with HFD. Twenty-five students and two adults who reported feeling ill were transported to Castle Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Moanalua.
As a precautionary measure, school administrators notified parents shortly after noon to pick up their children at Kaneohe District Park. The school day had been scheduled to end at 2:10 p.m. Kahaluu Elementary enrolls about 290 students.
Fire officials could not find the source of the odor. The all clear at the school was given at 1:35 p.m.
Classes will resume as scheduled on Friday.
