A dangerous mudslide on Maui has shut down a heavily used highway.
The Hana Highway is closed in both directions.
Red Cross officials have opened up an emergency shelter at Hana High School for those displaced.
It happened at about 5:30 p.m. near mile marker 14 in Kahului. Authorities say about 100 feet of roadway is blocked. Debris is reportedly 20 feet high.
No estimate on when the highway will be reopened and no reports of any injuries so far.
Officials say no cars were pushed off the road by the mudslide, but it is still unconfirmed if any vehicles are trapped under it.
Crews are on scene right now. Authorities say the mudslide is actively moving, but hindering cleanup and clearing efforts.
Sen. J. Kalani English has advised those attending the East Maui Taro Festival on Saturday to take a backside route via Kaupo.
