A Maui brush fire flared up again Wednesday in Kihei along the south side of Kaonoulu Street below Piilani Highway.
Fire crews responded to the flames that burned about 0.5 acre of land. Officials have not determined the cause, but believe it most likely was caused by a spot fire from the previous fire.
That earlier brush fire occurred in the same vicinity and was reported at around 12:45 p.m.
Fire officials say engine companies from Kihei, Wailea and Kahului responded as well as a tanker from Kahului and a fire department helicopter.
About two acres in Kihei were scorched by the fire. The fire was 75 percent contained by 2:01 p.m.
By 2:42 p.m., crews were mopping up at the scene.
Crews were called back at 5:20 p.m. to the same vicinity, but further south, for another brush fire. An area about a half acre in size was on fire.
The second brush fire was extinguished by 7:10 p.m.
An investigator could not determine the cause of the fires. Fire officials say the second fire was most likely caused by the initial fire.
No monetary damages or injuries have been reported.
