AMES, Iowa -

The Slater couple inside a car pushed off the tracks seconds before a train crossed an intersection spoke Thursday to KCCI NewsChannel 8.

“I really thought we weren’t going to make it,” said Jean Papich, who was stuck in the Clark Avenue Crossing with her husband, Marion Papich.

With seconds before impact, two good Samaritans jumped in and pushed the couple to safety.

“I’d call them heroes because they didn’t have to risk their life to get right down in front of the car between the car and the train and push us,” Marion said.

Marion and Jean have been married for 55 years.

Union Pacific Railroad officials said those who find themselves stuck on the tracks should get out and call 911.
