It's like riding a bicycle, the saying goes. But proficiency takes practice, and a strong guiding hand. KITV4's Ashley Moser takes a look at the Complete Streets movement for state-wide bicycle safety. 16 30 45 54-1.00 nat 7:25 "NOW YOU TURN RIGHT...AND THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER CIRCLE." 7:30 For 6 year old Erika - an empty parking lot is the perfect place to practice riding a bike. She says safety is important especially while riding next to cars! Erika 6:28 "TRY NOT TO GET TOO CLOSE TO IT OR GO ONTO THE SIDE OR A PLACE TO THE SIDE THAT'S SAFE." 6:34 But state officials are trying to change the relationship between bikers and drivers -- Making our roads safer for both to use. Breene 1:22 "IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME TO GET THE STREETS MORE UPGRADED, SO WE ARE TRYING TO ADD MORE BIKE PATHS MORE BIKE LANES." 1:28 Making changes to our roadways is also important to the Hawaii Bicycling League. Instructors say there's a key to keeping our keiki safe. Mickey 13:09 "BALANCE IS KEY TO STAYING ON THE BIKE THEY HAVE TO KEEP THEIR BODY CENTERED ON THE BIKE. THE BIKE MOVES ONE WAY THEY HAVE TO KEEP EVERYTHING CENTERED." 13:16 Standup Ashley 12:43 "INSTRUCTORS SAY TO WORK ON THAT BALANCE YOU CAN USE A SCOOTER OR A RAZOR. OR YOU CAN EVEN SCOOT ON A BICYCLE USING TWO FEET OR EVEN ONE -- EVENTUALLY PEDALING ON TO BE A CHAMP." 12:55 Just like Erika. 8:10 "NAT...I MAKE LIKE BOTH SIDES EVEN ...AND NOW WE TURN." 8:16 But state officials say it'll take time before people turn to biking as their main source of transportation. Breene 2:42 "LITTLE BY LITTLE AS WE TRAIN THE YOUNGER GENERATION -- IT'S NOT ABOUT JUMPING INTO CARS, WE CAN GET AROUND GREAT HEALTHY WAYS BY WALKING OR BIKING." 2:51 Ashley Moser -- KITV 4 News.
