Maui County officials say Baldwin Avenue was closed Wednesday afternoon due to a brush fire near Paia Elementary School.
The announcement was at around 2:20 p.m.
Firefighters from Paia and Kahului battled a fast-moving unscheduled cane fire which was reported at 2:17 p.m. It was located above Paia Elementary on Baldwin Avenue.
A Hawaii Commercial & Sugar Company representative reported that about one care of cane, worth $5,000, was lost in the fire.
Fire officials say the flames were extinguished by 3:14 p.m. No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Traffic was being rerouted to Holomua Road.
Baldwin Avenue was reopened by 3:20 p.m.
