Beloved store John's Grocery goes on saleUPDATED 8:29 PM HST Aug 18, 2014Video Transcript
Sad news for a beloved neighborhood hangout. For more than 80 YEARS -- John's Store in Puunui has been THE PLACE -- for shave ice, spam musbui, and memories -- for so many. But landowners have recently put the property up for sale. The listing even touts it -- as the home of the well-known "mom-and-pop." In December -- KITV featured the spot -- officially called "John's Groceries." Even then -- long-time manager Archie Lardizabal hinted -- he KNEW it wouldn't last forever. ARCHIE 2950 "ALL DEPENDS HOW IT GOES." DENNIS 5919-26 "GONE IS THE ERA OF ALL THE GOOD MOM AND POPS. THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING. I HOPE THEY STAY HERE FOR ANOTHER 100 YEARS." But what a run. Open since 1926. For years it was called "Puunui Market." We talked to Archie today. He says daughter of the 90 year-old land-owner -- needed the money -- to take care of her mom. He says they tried to buy the place -- but with the bank as the trustee -- it will likely go to a higher bidder. John says he's sad -- but looking forward to doing some fishing.
