CREWS LIFTING THE 24-THOUSAND POUND STRUCTURE OFF THE GROUND -- INTO THE AIR -- AND ONTO A TRUCK... HEADED TO THE PEPPERELL MILL CAMPUS ... WHERE IT WILL BE RESTORED. IT'S THE CULMINATION OF YEARS OF WAITING... THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ... AND AN ANXIOUS FEW MINUTES LOOKING UP FROM THE GROUND HERE TONIGHT. IT'S SAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN BIDDEFORD FOR NEARLY A DECADE. "this is one of the most beautiful examples of a new england mill clock tower that exists and the most important parts of it are intact" THURSDAY NIGHT -- THE LINCOLN MILL CLOCK TOWER... WAS UP IN THE AIR -- MOVING TO A NEW HOME. "a big wrecking ball go right on top of it" NO WRECKING BALLS -- BUT A CRAIN TO PICK UP THE 19TH- CENTURY ANTIQUE FROM THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT'LL BE DROPPED OFF ON THE PEPPERELL MILL CAMPUS TO BE REFURBISHED. "it's gone through a fairly extensive period of degregation since then, so it's basically become a blight" "never really thought much about it. When I drive by I see it, and it's like, 'it's still here'" NOW THE PLAN IS TO HAVE THE CLOCK RESTORED TO ITS GLORY -- "we think it's an important piece of the cultural history of this city. It's a major undertaking and when one of my colleagues, George Collard, brought it to us, we were very weary" AFTER LEGAL BATTLES... A DEADLINE OF SEPTEMBER... AND 26- THOUSAND DOLLARS... HISTORY IS ON THE MOVE. BIGGER PLANS ON THE MINDS OF MANY HERE. "i think it would be great if they could it back up there, but it would be great if they could have it renovated and come and visit"
