A highlight of today's Duke Oceanfest--- the FINAL heat of the AccesSurf competition. The local non-profit helps disabled individuals swim and surf. AccesSurf athletes competed in a three day event. When the non-profit joined OceanFest 8 years ago it had less than 10 competitors. Now-- there are 6 separate divisions with about 30 participants. CARA TROY, ACCESSURF: "IT HAS NOW GROWN IN SUCH POPULARITY THAT IN IN THE ADAPTIVE SURFING COMMUNITY A PRESTIGIOUS EVENT AND SO THIS YEAR WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE DIFFERENT ATHLETES TRAVELING FROM AUSTRALIA THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES TO OF COURSE THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS" The athletes are able to compete with customized gear. Depending on the participants injuries there are adaptive boards with back rests, handles and padding.
