Teen scales fence to hop on Hawaii flightUPDATED 7:36 AM HST Apr 21, 2014Video Transcript
We're following a developing story... this morning. The F-B-I says... a teen hid in the wheel well of a flight -- from California to Hawaii . But is surviving that kind of flight possible? Lots of questions this morning. Let's send it over to KITV 4's Ashley Moser with the latest. Ashley? Ann...it's both an unbelievable story of survivial...and a potentially terrifying breach of security. The aviation community is in disbelief this morning after a 16-year-old boy flew 23 hundred miles across the Pacific IN A PLANE'S wheel well. This...despite being subjected to frigid temperatures and nearly no oxygen. The Boeing 767 took off from the San Jose Airport shortly after 7:00 Sunday morning landing in Kahului Maui at 10:30 am. The F-B-I says security footage shows the boy hopping a fence at that airport before the flight. They say he then hid in the unprotected, unpressurized wheel well of hawaiian airlines flight 45-- immediately passing out once the flight got in the air. Incredibly-- they say he stayed there throughout the 5 and a half hour flight...and didn't come to until an hour after it landed at Maui airport. Surviving possible HYPOXIA and hypothermia. But how did the teen manage to get to that point? San Jose airport officials say this is a complete breach of security. :01 "DESPITE THIS NO SYSTEM IS 100 PERCENT AND IT IS POSSIBLE TO SCALE AN AIRPORT PERIMETER FENCE LINE ESPECIALLY UNDER DARKNESS AND REMAIN UNDETECTED. AND IT APPEARS THIS IS WHAT THIS TEENAGER DID." 0:17 The San Jose airport services 130 commercial and 86 general aviation departures daily. With flights to Kahului Maui daily. As for the teenager...he is now in the care of hawaii child protective services. Authorities say doctors checked him out and he appeared to be just fine. Reporting live in the newsroom. Ashley Moser.
