Pacific Tsunami Warning Center measures activity from Chile aftershocksUPDATED 9:43 PM HST Apr 03, 2014Video Transcript
After the major earthquake on Tuesday that caused a tsunami advisory here... There have been hundreds of after shocks in the area some of them quite strong. KITV4's Cam Tran looks at why there are so many and what this means for Hawaii. Nats: 36:30.. The scientists here at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center have been busy. Extremely busy. Nats: Ever since the 8.2 earthquake off northern Chile on April 1st, the same area has seen hundreds of aftershocks. Some well above 5.0. including a 7.8 yesterday. STANDUP:2:59: 48- 3:00:05 JUST IN THE HOUR WE'VE BEEN HERE AT THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WE'VE SEEN ABOUT A DOZEN EARTHQUAKES. SCIENTIST SAY THERE ARE SEISMOMETERS IN THE AREA PICKING UP THE ACTIVITY AS WELL AS THE FACT THERE'S JUST BEEN MORE ACTIVITY IN THE AREA. IN: 51;15 BOTH THE NUMBER AND THE SIZE, WE'VE HAD SEVERAL UP IN THE 6'S AND WE HAD A 7.8 WAS SO LARGE IT COULD BE ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE ON ITS OWN 51:29 This is an area in the Pacific Ocean where two tectonic plates meet making it more prone to earthquake activity. IN: 41:08 PART OF THE ENERGY IN THE EARTH HAS BEEN RELEASED AND PART OF IT HASN'T SO NOW THERE'S CONTINUING LITTLE ADJUSTMENTS AND THAT'S WHAT THE AFTERSHOCKS ARE 41:15 But the big concern for Hawaii and those in South America, with all these aftershocks could a stronger quake on the way? IN:43:49 THERE COULD BE IN DEED ANOTHER LARGER EARTHQUAKE BUT IS UNLIKELY Unlikely but it has happened before. IN:44:39 IN 1960 THE LARGEST EARTHQUAKE IN RECORDED HISTORY OCCURRED A 9.5 BUT THE DAY BEFORE THAT IS WAS A 8.4 THERE WAS A VERY VERY LARGE EARTHQUAKE FOR WHICH THERE WAS A TSUNAMI ISSUED AND THEN THE FOLLOWING DAY THERE WAS AN EVEN LARGER EARTHQUAKE SO WE HAVE TO KEEP OUR GUARD 44 :52 That 1960 tsunami killed 60 people in Hawaii and wiped out downtown Hilo. And that's why this scientist says you should always be ready by knowing your evacuation zone and your route having a disaster bag ready. Reporting from Ewa Beach, Cam Tran KITv 4 News. Fryer says with every BIG earthquake theres a 3-4 percent chance it would be followed by a larger one.
