plate for your plate lunch... Those styrofoam boxes could go the way of the 8-track tape! There's a push to BAN them in Honolulu... KITV4's Brenton Awa is live at the Blaisdell Farmer's market where there's no shortage of food containers.. Kenny -- there's all types of containers out here. From foam -- to plastics -- even compostable kinds... And if this bill gets passed -- this is the type of container everybody will be getting used to. 16 38 You know the sight.. You know the sound... It's one of those things that makes Hawaii, Hawaii.. A plate lunch served up in a styrofoam box. You might love it... But the environment doesn't. Supporters of a ban on styrofoam boxes say it's time to start siding with the environment. 1129 - Mike "WE'RE NOT GOING TO GET RID OF DISPOSABLE PLASTICS BUT THIS SENDS A STRONG MESSAGE AND IS A HUGE VOLUME ISSUE." They want to get rid of plastic, too. Vendors say... Hold on! 4248 - 4305 - Jennifer Hino - The girls who bake next door "RIGHT NOW PLASTIC IS JUST SO WIDELY USED AND ACCEPTED, IT WORKS FOR SO MANY DIFFERENT PRODUCTS OTHER THAN YOUR STANDARD PLATE LUNCH. WHEN THERE ARE OTHER ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE THEN LOOK INTO A BILL BUT RIGHT NOW BANNING ALL PLASTIC I THINK IS JUST A LITLLE BIT HARSH RIGHT NOW." For business owners, it comes down to money. Environmentally safe containers cost more. So you'll pay more. Supporters have an answer for that, too. 1738 - Mike "WHETHER THE PRICE OF MEAT OR BREAD OR STYROFOAM OR COMPOSTABLES GOES UP, THE PRICE GOES UP ACCORDINGLY AND THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING FOR THE ISLAND ARE PAYING 10- CENTS MORE AND THE PEOPLE WHO AREN'T ARE GETTING IT 10-CENTS CHEAPER." Restaurant owners say the actual cost is more than a dime... And right now... Compostable materials have to come from the mainland. Local manufacturers would be affected. 4043 - 4050 - Jennifer Hino - The girls who bake next door "THERE ISN'T ENOUGH OUT THERE RIGHT NOW THAT'S BEING MANUFACTURE D TO PROVIDE VIABLE SOLUTIONS FOR ALL FOOD SERVICE BUSINESSES." One person who testified today says the ban would close them down... Along with 100- jobs. Bill 40 was deferred today pending a study on what kinds of health effects if any styrofoam material has on people as well as how the passing of this bill would impact local businesses.
