Lawmakers hope to enforce helmet bill for safer skateboardingUPDATED 5:34 PM HST Jun 07, 2014Video Transcript
One glance at this skate park in Kaneohe is all it takes to realize how popular the sport can be... Dozens of competitors showed up with their boards -- shoes and supporters ... But lawmakers say the most important safety feature has been forgotten... That's helmets. We saw just one being worn at the park today. Lawmakers want to make it a requirement for anyone under 16-years-old. But skate-boarders say... 1658 - Nathan Ahina - 808 Skate "THEY'RE WASTING TIME AND MONEY AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO WEAR IT ANYWAYS." Purists tells us taking risks is part of the game and making helmets a requirement would ruin the sport. 1617 - Ahina "A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULDN'T WEAR IT JUST BECAUSE THE RISK AINT THERE ANYMORE, IT'S NOT AS EXCITING AND IT'S A NUISSANCE, IT GETS IN THE WAY." Lawmakers were hoping to change that mind-set -- to help prevent skate-boarders from getting hurt -- or worse -- dying. This past week a skate-boarding accident resulted in a man's death after he crashed into a car in Kaimuki. Just a few days earlier -- a 14- year-old was critically injured while riding on the road in Aiea. Both were not wearing helmets. 2841 - Joey Manahan "IF YOU'RE GOING TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT YOU'RE GOING TO GET SERIOUSLY HURT, SERIOUSLY INJURED, IF NOT RESULT IN A FATALITY." ...And the list goes on... Last month a 44-year-old skater died in a crash in Ka'a'awa. A 13-year-old was left fighting for his life after getting hit by a car in Salt Lake ... And a 26-year-old man died from a skate-boarding accident in Kaneohe late last year. 2658 - Joey Manahan "PART OF THE INTENT OF THE BILL WAS TO HOPEFULLY GET CHILDREN IN THE HABIT OF WEARING HELMETS AT AN EARLY AGE TO PREVENT RISKIER BEHAVIOR AS THEY GET OLDER." While the measure is no where near becoming a law... There are a few skaters that say they wouldn't mind wearing helmets -- but safety isn't the reason. 2148 - Leif Kennedy - SK "I THINK IT COULD BE GOOD BUSINESS FOR THE SHOPS. THEY COULD MAKE SHOP HELMETS LIKE AN 808 SKATE HELMET, AN HELMET, AN INFORMATION HELMET OR SOMETHING." The bill that would've made it a requirement for skate- boarders under 16-years-old to wear helmets has already been deferred. Police say one of the problems was that it would've been difficult to enforce. Looking forward -- Joey Manahan says another option to help keep skaters safe could come by way of Skate-boarding safety programs.
