tonight... ...coming out of the Honolulu Zoo. Where just last week a Chimpanzee escaped from its exhibit. KITV4's Brenton Awa is standing by to tells us how it happened. This story's all new at 6. 19-33 41-45 This is Pu'iwa... A 15-year-old Chimpanzee who's back with his buddies after a brief getaway. 719 - 723 "HE'S OUR YOUNGEST CHIMP AND SO I BELIEVE THAT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT." Pu'iwa climbed out of his exhibit last week Thursday. This is the the enclosure where he and seven others roam around in the zoo. Here's what we're told happened. STAND-UP This is the view from behind the glass. Pu'iwa was said to have been climbing on the top of this wall... Right behind that rock. He got there after he found a small chip in the wall and was able to use the hole as grip to pull himself to the top. end standup This was the moment of truth... He could've jumped down into the public area... And this might be a different type of story. Luckily.. 1010 "WELL HE WAS NO LONGER IN THE EXHIBIT, HE CHOSE NOT TO MOVE OFF OF THE WALL THAT HE WAS ON." The Zoo's director says Pu'iwa was contained within an hour while visitors were moved to secure locations. Now the zoo's concentrating on securing the chimpanzees enclosure. It's more than just patching that hole. 803 "SO THE EXHIBIT WALL IN A LOT OF AREAS JUST ENDS. WE'RE GOING TO ACTUALLY CREATE AN OVERHANG AND WE'RE GOING TO DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF ELECTRICAL WIRES THAT'S IN THERE NOW." In the meantime -- the exhibit's off limits. The chimps are being held in a nearby pen that's out of sight. Officials say their temporary day pen is large enough for the 8 chimps to socialize and play. ...And they'll have to get used to it. Work on the wall is expected to last four another four weeks. The zoos capture team had to use a tranquilizer dart to catch Pu'iwa last week but we're told he wasn't injured. Officials tell us the cost for repairs to the retaining wall will cost somewhere between 75- and-100-thousand-do llars.
