Hokule'a tented and fumigated in preparation for voyageUPDATED 8:36 PM HST May 15, 2014Video Transcript
High profile bug battles all over Oahu today... Highlighted by a rare tenting and fumigation of the sea-ready Hokulea. Why crew members say this event really exemplifies the mission to Malama Honua. Majestic, legendary, and on this morning... Wrapped in the red and black tenting of a pest control company. The Hokulea is barely recognizable with its mast and rig down.. Much less so when it's sealed up. But fumigation quickly became part of the preparation for its voyage when some ants tried to stow away on the canoe. Crews from the Polynesian Voyaging Soceity believe the pests probably came aboard during dry dock. Not an infestation. but still an invasive species. So in the spirit of the voyage---Malam a Hawaii --- to care for this earth getting rid of the ants was the right thing to do. 21:32-21:52 ITS MORE THAN AN ANT. ITS ABOUT BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE. THESE CANOES REPRESENT THE SPECIAL AND COMPASSION OF AN ISLAND COMMUNITY AND AS WE TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD WE don't WANT TO BRING ANY MORE PROBLEMS TO THESE REALLY FRAGILE ENVIRONMENT S Kamaaina Termite and Pest Control is donating the entire fumigating process. 19:28- 19:36 david menton WE GOT A CALL FROM NAINOA THOMPSON AND IT WAS SOMETHING WE COULD DEFINITELY HANDLE WE STEPPED UP AND WE'LL TAKE CARE OF IT FOR HIM SO WHEN THEY LEAVE THEY LEAVE WITH NOTHING 19:11-19:23 WE FUMIGATE BOATS YEAR AROUND. WE PROBABLY DO 30-100 BOATS A YEAR SO THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON. IT IS UNCOMMON TO DO SUCH A PRESTIGIOUS BOAT SUCH AS THE HOKULEA BUT ITS NOT AN UNCOMMON TREATMENT AT ALL. It's a one day process. 21;52-22:10 DOES TENTING DO ANYTING FOR THE TIME FROM FOR THE VOYAGE? NO WE'LL BE PULLING THE TENT OFF THIS EVENING AND THEN JUST A MATTER NOW OF STANDING UP THE MASS AN RIG AND LOADING UP THE CANOE WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO MEET THE DEPARTURE SCHEDULE OF 5;30 SATURDAY EVENING.
