The Hokole'a and it's sister canoe Hiki-ana-lia are just a few weeks away from the start of their voyage around the world. KITV4's Brenton Awa went onboard today for a behind- the-scenes look at the training for this epic journey. The mission of Hokule'a over these next four years is simple -- Malama Honua -- or to care for the earth. It's the trip that's daunting. 47-thousand-miles of open ocean -- through 26 countries in an effort to exchange knowledge with other cultures. 707 - Catherine Fuller "WE HAVE THE SAME ISSUES WITH OUR ISLANDS, WITH OUR OCEANS, WITH OUR RESOURCES, WITH GROWING POPULATIONS. " To prepare -- crews have to train... Everything from running and swimming -- to safety and education sessions. NATS "PU..." On this day -- a crew of about a dozen are doing double duties... For one -- they're testing and tuning Hokule'a. Trying to figure out where to set her sails -- which ones to use -- and adjusting trim. 3527 CHAD BAYBAYAN "WE'RE FINDING OUT THAT THIS CANOE IS PRETTY FAST AND IT POINTS REAL WELL IN THE WIND." 3538 WE KNOW THAT HOKULE'A IS A LOT BETTER PERFORMING THAN IT'S BEEN IN IT'S 40-YEAR HISTORY." The crews also giving a tour to guests... 622 - 634 Catherine Fuller "IT'S TRAINING FOR US TO REFRESH OUR MEMORIES AND GET OUR SKILLS SHARPER BUT FOR THEM TO TEACH THEM TOO, IF YOU CAN TEACH A SKILL YOU CAN LEARN IT BETTER." and most importantly... Working together as a team... As a family. 2420 - No name "FOR ME IT'S BEEN MORE THAN JUST LEARNING ABOUT HAWAIIAN CULTURE AND SAILING, IT'S ALSO ABOUT MAKING FRIENDS AND THE CONNECTIONS YOU MAKE." 831 - Catherine "IT KIND OF EXPANDS YOUR CONCIOUSNES S INTO THE CANOE. YOU ARE A PART OF THIS AND THIS IS YOUR MOM, YOUR ISLAND, YOUR HOME FOR WHATEVER PART OF THE VOYAGE YOU'RE ON." 3620 - CHAD BAYBAYAN "IT'S A PRETTY PROFOUND AND PRETTY INSPIRING EXPERIENCE TO GET A WIDE RANGE OF INDIVIDUALS, COMING TOGETHER COLLECTIVELY ABOARD THE CANOE AND GETTING THEM TO ASPIRE TO THE SAME VISION AND MISSION AS A TEAM." BRENTON STANDUP "THERE'S STILL A LOT OF WORKS THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE OUT HERE IN GETTING THE CREW AND CANOE READY FOR THIS TRIP AND THE CLOCK'S COUNTING DOWN. HOKULE'A IS EXPECTED TO SET SAIL TO HILO IN 20 DAYS. IN SAND ISLAND, BRENTON AWA KITV4 NEWS."
