That earthquake had a magnitude 8 point 2. It struck just 61 miles northwest of the Chilean city of Iquique. ee-key-kay Around 1-45 this afternoon Hawaii Time. Chilean officials say two people have died. And thousands have evacuated coastal regions in Chile, and South America. The great quake also shook buildings in nearby nations of Bolivia and Peru. NO VERBATIM FOR CLOSED CAPTIONING And it was exactly 68 years ago today that a strong quake in Alaska triggered a tsunami that impacted our islands. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Hawaii-- killing 159 people statewide. The 8 point six earthquake generated a tsunami with 30 foot waves in Hilo and 50 foot waves on the north shore of Moloka'i.
