Hawaii Kai carnival controversyUPDATED 10:33 PM HST Mar 24, 2014Video Transcript
controversial carnival in Hawaii Kai has packed up...and organizers are already eyeing a second run. Good evening, I'm Kenny Choi. And I'm Yunji de Nies.. Some residents say not so fast. KITV4's Brenton Awa has our top story tonight. The fun at kuapa is all but over... for this year. 3924 - D "IT'S NOT ONLY IN THE PIPELINE FOR US, IT'S IN THE PIPELINE FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE AND ALL THOSE FAMILIES THAT CAME OUT. THEY WANT IT, THEY ENJOYED IT, THEY WANT IT TO COME BACK AND WE'LL COME BACK FOR THEM." E-K Fernandez was confident the Hawaii Kai community would embrace a carnival -- It says for the most part they did. But some community members -- including the neighborhood board feel left out of the planning process. 3146 - P "WHY WERE WE BLINDSIDED BY THIS? THAT WAS COMPLETELY UNNESESARY AND I THINK THAT WAS DONE PURPOSELY." Paige Altonn argues that the carnival didn't notify the board -- when other organizations do. 3239 P "THEY DON'T ASK US, WE DON'T HAVE NO POWER TO SAY YES OR KNOW BUT ITS NICE TO INFORM THE COMMUNITY THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE HAPPENING, THIS IS GOING TO AFFECT YOUR TRAFFIC, THIS IS A STATE HIGHWAY, THIS ISNT A BACK ROAD." It's also not the place the board would've wanted the carnival to be because they feel this could lead to development on the "great lawn." 3334 P "KAISERS HAD CARNIVALS IN THE PAST, MANY CARNIVALS AND it's a PERFECT VENUE. LOTS OF ROOM LOTS OF PARKING, IT DOESNT AFFECT THE COMMUNITY THE WAY THIS AFFECTS THE COMMUNITY. But E-K Fernadez says it's tried to work with Kaiser High School through three principals -- and could never come to an agreement. Still -- the 111-year-old company wanted to provide a place for community groups like Kaiser Highs football team to raise some funds for their its school. 4044 D "YOU KNOW A CARNIVAL IS ALSO ABOUT BONDING, THE BONDING OF THE PARENTS AND STUDENTS AND COACHES AND THAT WAS OBVIOUS AT THIS EVENT. As for how much funding those volunteers raised -- E-K Fernandez keeps that confidential. The companies vice president will be at the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board meeting tomorrow night to answer questions.
