central." Good evening, I'm Paula Akana. And I'm Yunji de Nies. Mass development is underway... And we're now getting word of nearly a dozen new sets of human remains that were discovered just off Ala Moana Boulevard. KITV's Catherine Cruz has our top story tonight at 6. 35 121 Cars for sale sit on this lot right now ... A high-rise is expected next... But recently the focus has been what's underneath. 11 sets of human remains... Iwi.. Discovered during an archeological survey last summer. - Paulette :36 - "I am confident they will do the pono thing." Paulette Kaleikini is recognized as a cultural descendant of this area... She took on two giants General Growth and Walmart over iwi found at their construction sites. Her lawsuit scuttled plans for Whole Foods at the Ward Village site now occupied by TJ Maxx. Companies have started changing their approach... Consulting early and often.. - 908-9:12 -"It's has improved our relationships with the developers," The key has been completing archeological surveys before designing projects... That helps avoid lawsuits and delays. In the case of Kamehameha schools whose beneficieries are native Hawaiians--there are added cultural pressures. - Paulette 4;39-4;44 -We did ask for additional trenching knowing this is iwi central. It is a very sensitive area." Kamehameha schools planned to dig 46 trenches on what they refer to as "Block I" but then upped that to 90. The thing about Ala Moana blvd is that is where the shoreline used to be. And sand is where Hawaiians buried their dead. So the chances of finding additional burials is high. There were more than 60 sets found at Ward Village and again at the Waihonua project around the corner. CRUZ 16; 32-1645 The fear about all this construction in the urban core is finding a mass burial site like we saw at Queen and Punchbowl. There were more than a thousand remains unearthed during a board of water supply project in the '90's. Mass burials require more care and higher protection instead of being reburied somewhere else. Its under this marker that iwi from the Auahi area has been reinterred Fragmented remains were discovered on Halekauwila and more recently on Punchbowl during the rail route survey are considered case by case. But its not just new highrises and rail uncovering iwi. Kaleikini says state transportation crews recently unearthed iwi on during construction on Ala Moana Blvd which were just reburied in place. - 12: 00- 1212 -"For the most part the developers are wanting to do the pono thing and they are reaching out to everybody concerned. They descendants the native hawaiian the community. They are reaching out." Kamehamea Schools plans to build more than a half a dozen highrises in Kakaako. Kaleikini says the land under the old Comp USA lot where "The Collection" will stand is mostly limestone coral so the likely hood of unearthing iwi is low.
