Naeem Williams may learn this week his sentence for the part he played in the beating death of his 5 year old daughter. One of the defense arguments is that he was a victim of child abuse himself. KIT4V's Paul Drewes takes a look at the common causes of abuse and if this violence turns victims into abusers. Little Talia died after months of vicious beatings. Her father, Naeem claims part of the reason for the attacks was that he had been beaten by his dad. graphic #1 According to the Department of Health's most recent data, parental history of abuse IS one of the factors identified as contributing to the abuse or neglect of a child, but it only makes up a very small percentage of the total number of 1361 confirmed cases. Reported cases of abuse have been going down in recent years, but experts believe many more are happening they never hear about. 5:35 "for every one case of child abuse reported, another 5 go unreported" Williams expressed anger over Talia's inability to be potty trained. Abuse can also take the form of threatening harm, neglect, or psychological abuse. Those who works with children are required by law to report suspected cases of child abuse. Those who fail to report abuse can be prosecuted.
