City extends road work timeline on Waialae AvenueUPDATED 10:31 PM HST Mar 31, 2014Video Transcript
New information tonight on a major road project... Over deadline -- and over budget -- with no clear end in sight. Road crews were SUPPOSED to finish reconstructing and repaving Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki -- by last December. But the city says the project has been plagued with problems -- primarily -- SINK HOLES AND SOFT SPOTS -- dotting the underbelly of a water-logged road. TAKASHIGE PHONER: 2540-54 "THIS IS EXCEPTIONAL. THE ONLY OTHER TIME WE'VE SEEN THIS MANY SOFT SPOTS IS PROBABLY IN WAHIAWA ON ONE OF OUR JOBS, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, WE HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MANY." Takashige says they are now using a different, more expensive type of treatment -- in an effort to better stabilize the ground. Earlier this year, the city allotted an EXTRA one million dollars to cover the work -- bumping the cost to 10 and a half million. The city is NOW hoping to have the road DONE by MID-JULY.
