The cost of being a cell phone chatterbox is going through the roof... Talking or texting while you're driving in Hawaii will cost you close to 300-dollars! And KITV4's Brenton Awa shows us ... enforcement starts today! 03 13-16 33 50-58 59 118 If you drive -- chances are you've seen it... 120 - 124 - Bonnie "I'M THINKING, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHERE ARE THE POLICE WHEN YOU NEED THEM." ...distracted drivers -- one hand on the wheel, one hand on the cell phone.. Either talking or texting. 405 - Dania "IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO DOESN'T TEXT AND DRIVE." It's the new age-old question: how important is that call or text? 347 - Dania "I'VE PERSONALLY BEEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS BECAUSE I'M TEXTING." 107 - 118 - Bonnie "PEOPLE TEXTING ON THEIR PHONES, HOLDING UP TRAFFIC, MERGING AND LIKE COMING INTO THE LANES BECAUSE THEIR NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND IT CAUSES TRAFFIC AND DELAYS." 228- 238 - Silas "I'VE DEFINITELY SEEN MANY MANY PEOPLE AND HAVE BEEN CUT OFF BY PEOPLE WHEN TEXTING AND DRIVING, I SEE THEM SWERVING AROUND IN THE LANES, IT'S ANNOYING." Annoying? Yes. Expensive? Even more-so! You thought 160-dollars of so was bad? Hawaii just raised the fine for distracted driving to 297- dollars... ...And that fine goes up after that... The ticket climbs to 347- dollars if you're caught in a school or construction zone. 308 - Sapna "I DON'T THINK YOU CAN PUT A PRICE ON LIFE AND IF PEOPLE ARE TEXTING AND DRIVING, THE ACCIDENT RATES GO UP SO REALLY I'M OKAY WITH THE PRICE GOING UP FOR TICKETS." One convenience of the new law is that you'll no longer have to go to court after getting a ticket. Lawmakers say the previous laws created a backlog of over 300-pending cases in court. 508 - Ryan "DOING IT THIS WAY WAS ACTUALLY BACKLOGGING THE JUDICIARYS CURRENT PROCESS AND IT wasn't GIVING THE PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE FORWARD AFTER GETTING CAUGHT WITH ELECTRONIC DEVICES." The Governor signed this bill into law just a couple of hours ago and it goes into effect immediately. Lawmakers tell us the money collected from these fines goes into the state highway fund and the general fund.
