HONOLULU -- A 20-member military team on Wake Island reported that Typhoon Ioke caused significant damage. The team arrived on Sept. 8, on the U.S.N.S. San Jose. Members found the runway remained intact, but the lights were missing. The typhoon inflicted moderate to severe damage to about 70 percent of the buildings on the island.
The island's power grid suffered major damage. Workers reported damage to power lines running to a majority of the buildings and the majority of back up generators. The assessment team found that the fuel tanks were secure. There is no running water, but officials said that there is about 8,000 gallons of water that can be purified.Only three of 31 vehicles could not function when the team arrived. They found that nine required minor maintenance.Another 53 people arrived on Monday from Hickam Air Force Base on Oahu. The second group has been assigned to provide the Air Force more information about the island's status.
