Investigators said that a fire that engulfed a church in Waianae on Tuesday afternoon was intentionally set.

The fire broke out at about 12:45 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 85-574 Plantation Road.

The fire destroyed the church's gym that had a stage and a basketball court, plus two offices and a kitchen, fire officials said.

One person was in the building at the time and escaped unharmed, according to an HFD spokesman.

The fire was started in three places, investigators said.

The church had two break-ins in the past two weeks. Officials said they are trying to determine whether the break-ins are related to the fire.

The federal government's Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is investigating the case because it happened at a church and could be regarded as a hate crime, authorities said.

The fire cause about $500,000 in damage, officials said.
