Army Outlines Case Against WatadaPOSTED: 3:54 am HST August 18,
2006 FORT LEWIS, Wash. -- The Army has laid out its case against an officer from Hawaii facing possible court-martial for refusing to go to Iraq.Prosecutors showed video footage of 1st Lt. Ehren Watada calling the war illegal. The investigating officer who listened to the evidence will recommend whether Watada should stand trial on charges of missing troop movement, conduct unbecoming an officer and contempt toward officials. Lt. Col. Mark Keith could recommend anything from dismissal of the charges to a general court-martial. Keith will make his recommendation to Lt. Gen. James Dubik. He has final say on whether Watada should stand trial.Meanwhile, Watada said late Thursday that he is prepared to go to prison and is at peace with his decision."It was something, a decision, I didn't want to make," he said. "I'm definitely not proud, not happy, to be left behind by my unit, to see my soldiers go and go without me. But I felt it was necessary. It was something that I had to do according to my oath to protect this country, to protect the people and protect the soldiers under my charge." If convicted, Watada could face seven years in prison and a dishonorable discharge. Copyright 2006 by TheHawaiiChannel.com. The Associated Press contributed to this report. All rights reserved.
