For the second time in a month, a Honolulu cab driver has been shot by a passenger in a robbery attempt. On Saturday night, police were involved in a manhunt for a passenger who attacked, then shot a 52-year-old taxi driver. The shooting happened outside First Hawaiian Bank near Pearl Ridge. Yukyu Kim was critically injured as he dropped off a passenger.Police said the passenger shot Kim in the neck, then fled in Kim's taxi. The Honda van was found later in Kaneohe.Mahn Nguyen, another taxi driver working for the same company, The Cab, was killed July 6 on Tantlus."I am so distraught," said Howard Higa, president of The Cab. "I am still trying to recover from Mahn's death ... a senseless murder. And now we have another isolated situation, and absolutely I have no words for this."Taxi drivers from The Cab said it's probably a coincidence that two drivers from their company were shot within a month. Nonetheless, they said, it makes them feel vulnerable."It is easy for someone to grab us from behind, put us in a choke hold, put a knife or gun against our throat," said Tex Guting, who has been driving a cab for 19 years. "My daughter just told me today that another driver was shot last night. And she said, 'Dad, quit.' I can't. I've been doing this too long."For protection, taxi drivers have an emergency button that goes to dispatch and within seconds, their location is dispatched to the Honolulu Police Department.Queen's Hospital refuses to release the condition of taxi driver Kim, but his friends said he appears to be recovering. After the 2 shootings, The Cab said it will urge its drivers to install plastic barriers between themselves and passengers. They said they will also encourage drivers to install surveillance cameras in their taxis. The company plans to have more safety training classes for dispatchers and drivers. The Cab employs 600 taxi drivers.
