A local author said that Honolulu is celebrating its centennial birthday too early.

The city of Honolulu has been celebrating its 100th birthday with a number of different events this year.

Local author, Rich Budnick, a stickler for the facts in his book "Hawaii's Forgotten History," said that the city has jumped the gun and celebrated its centennial two years too soon.

"It's technically incorrect because the County of Oahu was established in 1905; the City and County of Honolulu in 1907," Budnick said.

Records show that there was no city established when Hawaii's five counties were created in 1905.

"That was July 1, 1905, so we decided to begin there," Honolulu Centennial Co-Chairman Ron Wright said.

"Two years later -- May 1, 1907 -- signs the municipal bill for the City and County of Honolulu," Budnick said. "So, it would have been more appropriate if all the counties had approved 100th year birth date to establish their county governments, but here in Honolulu, we are celebrating birth date of the City and County of Honolulu, which was in 1907 not 1905."

Budnick's book is a timeline on Hawaii's history from 1900 to 1999.
