Lt. Gov. James Aiona signed three bills targeting underage drinking and drunken driving into law on Monday.

Because of the new laws, anyone under 21 who is caught purchasing, possessing, or drinking alcohol will lose his or her driver's license.

"Alcohol is still by far the No. 1 drug of choice for our young people. Secondly, it is more likely to kill young people then all other drugs combined," Aiona said.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 15 and 20.

When Aiona signed House Bill 3242, it added consumption to purchasing and possessing alcohol as illegal, making Hawaii the 37th state to have such a prohibition.

Senate Bill 706 is known as the "Use and Lose Law." If an underage person uses alcohol, purchases it, or possesses it anywhere that person will have their license suspended for 180 days. If the person doesn't have a license they won't be able to get one during that period.
