Hawaii Violent Crime Up Slightly In 2005POSTED: 7:44 am HST June 12, 2006 HONOLULU -- Hawaii saw an increase in violent crime last year, according to the latest FBI statistics that were just released on Monday morning. There were 2,570 violent crimes committed in Hawaii in 2005. That's 63 more than in 2004.The numbers show that there were 11 fewer murders in 2005 -- compared to 2004 -- for a total of 15.Rape, robbery, assaults and property crimes were all up in 2005, but auto thefts were down.In 2004, there were 7,369 auto thefts reported. Last year, that crime dropped to 6,798.Even though violent crime is up about 2 percent for 2005, overall the FBI said that Honolulu is still a very safe place to live, especially compared to mainland cities of the same size."I think that like any big city, drugs here, specifically our methamphetamine problem, contributes to the property crime problem," FBI Special Agent Charles Goodwin said.
