The "Akaka Bill" is set for an important milestone Tuesday, when Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is expected to introduce a measure to bring the controversial bill to the Senate floor.

At least 60 senators must agree to that, paving the way for up to 30 hours of debate.

Then, the Senate could vote on the bill sometime in the next week or so.

The Akaka Bill would help native Hawaiians establish their own nation, which would eventually be recognized by the U.S. government. Opponents of the bill say it's discriminatory and race-based.
