HONOLULU -- The family of a woman who drowned off Hawaii Kai three years ago has reached a settlement with a local scuba diving company and a manufacturer.
The settlement is worth about $1.4 million.
Susann Lovejoy, her husband Greg, and their daughter Kelsey, 13, went on a dive tour at Maunalua Bay in July 2003.
Her buoyancy compensator reportedly malfunctioned, causing her to panic, inhale water and drown.
The family's lawyer said the diving company failed to supervise her.
"Had they been watching her, this could have been avoided, even with the defective product," attorney Rick Fried said.
The diving company and the manufacturer and distributor of the buoyancy compensator paid the settlement.
