Restaurant Inspections Find Maggots, Roaches In Food, Drinks

Inspectors Investigate Complaints From Customers

POSTED: 10:57 pm HST May 22, 2006

KITV investigative reporter Keoki Kerr reviewed hundreds of restaurant inspections covering the first three months of this year, and found some unappetizing results.

On March 1, a customer complained that a Happy Meal purchased for a child from the Waianae McDonalds had an unexpected condiment. The complaintant said there were maggots in the child's Sprite drink.

The McDonalds manager told the state sanitarian who came to investigate the complaint that they had already discovered the maggots problem there. The manager said it was caused by a cup of saimin that somehow had fallen underneath a piece of equipment. The manager said that flies got into the saimin and started breeding, the maggots followed and then those maggots somehow crawled into the drinking cups there.

The Waianae McDonalds crew said they cleaned and sanitized the area where the maggots were found and replaced the drinking cups.

McDonalds released a written statement saying it "worked with the Department of Health to ensure this was an isolated incident."

"We are committed to providing the highest quality food, service and environment to our customers and will continue to do so," the statement said.

In another case, someone complained about finding cockroaches in November in the beef and egg soup at Wok and Grill Express just off California Avenue in Wahiawa.

"We strive to have the restaurants control the problem," State Sanitation Branch Manager Rex Mitsunaga said.

A state sanitarian inspected the restaurant a few days later and found roaches all over the place. When the sanitarian came back for a second inspection two months later, he found roaches in the front service area, as well as the prep and cooking areas and storage shelves.

"And then we'll make recommendations to the establishment. That they may have to hire a professional pest control operator and try to correct the problem," Mitsunaga said.

A third health violation was reported in February by a customer from L and L Drive Inn at Fort Street Mall. The customer found a cockroach in macaroni salad. A state sanitarian investigated and found roaches in the refrigerator door gasket and in the restroom.

To report unsanitary conditions at a restaurant kitchen, call the state Health Department at 586-8000. If you get sick from restaurant food, and think you may have a food borne illness, call 586-4586, and the state will investigate.
