Groups Tell U.N. That U.S. Is Violating Native Hawaiian Rights

POSTED: 2:13 pm HST May 4, 2006

Several Native Hawaiian groups have told the United Nations that the United States is violating their human rights.

Hawaiians have submitted a report to the United Nations Human Rights Commission that is investigating whether the United States has complied with an international human rights treaty.

The Hawaiians said the United States overthrew their kingdom and therefore has violated their rights.

"In fact, the United States of America is in violation of the international treaty on political and civil rights, and that the United States has failed to provide justice and the right of self-determination to Native Hawaiian people," Native Hawaiian activist Mililani Trask said.

Representatives will be taking part in a U.N. Forum on indigenous issues next month in New York.
