A man who worked as a part-time educational aide at Castle High School is being accused of sexually abusing students as well as buying alcohol and drugs for them.

Parents and teachers gave statements to police on Thursday; one day after the man was relieved of his duties at Castle.

Castle students told a story of an ex-Marine in his early 30s, who would cut school with kids. He is accused of having sexual contact with both male and female students. The man allegedly told the kids he practiced witchcraft and could put spells on them.

The man was a substitute educational assistant at Castle High School, who usually worked five days a week there. He said he was a massage therapist who students said would gain kids' confidence and use massage to seduce them into sexual contact.

"He just grab 'em by the shoulder and just rub them like that. It's freaky," freshman William Silva said.

Many of the questionable activities happened off-campus, often after school at nearby parks and bus stops, students said.

"He used to buy us alcohol; he used to buy us drugs, marijuana. He used to buy us cigars, cigarettes," junior Ryan Santos said.

Last week, parents and students said the man called in sick and then got a group of students to cut class and go hiking in nearby Haiku, where they drank and smoked pot.

"He's broken a lot of rules where the school is concerned. He's also broken a lot of trust, for parents, and really scared a lot of parents," parent Kathy Olivera said.

One girl said the man's inappropriate behavior happened on campus as well.

"There'd be girls walking down the hall and he'd grab their (buttocks) and he grabbed mine," sophomore Tasha Shore said.

Shore said the man offered her marijuana.

"Even on campus, he'd pull it out and say 'Let's go burn' or something," she said.

"Eventually I had my suspicions after he started to practice magic with us, and kind of got a little too sexually comfortable with us," sophomore Joseph Madeiros said.

The parents of a 15-year-old Castle freshman, who refused to appear on camera, said the school didn't aggressively investigate their allegations about the man last fall.

Parents told KITV that they complained to school officials in September that they feared the man was having an inappropriately close relationship with their son, potentially a sexual relationship.

"I'm really afraid for other kids out there on this island, that he's going to go work somewhere else, and he'll do the same thing with other kids," parent Bonnie Goldstein said.

Castle High School Principal Meredith Maeda told KITV Thursday afternoon that Wednesday was the man's last day of work at the school. He said Castle is conducting its own investigation for any improper activities that allegedly happened on campus and is cooperating with police, who are conducting a criminal investigation.

A Department of Education spokesman said the man passed a criminal background check before being hired.
