Sewage Spill Threatens To Close Some BeachesTeams Test Water Along Oahu's South ShorePOSTED: 11:09 am HST March 29,
2006 HONOLULU -- Massive sewage main breaks in Waikiki could become the largest in Honolulu's history. So far, currents have taken millions of gallons of raw sewage from the massive break in Waikiki out to sea, but that could change soon.Officials have been very careful to try and divert sewage pollution away from Waikiki. However, if the weather doesn't cooperate pollution warnings could extend down the coast. Surfers and swimmers should stay alert for the latest advisories, officials said.Crews have been trying to remove some of the debris at the Ala Wai Bridge. The last thing the city needs now is to have the sewage and contaminated water from the Ala Wai Canal back up and flood the entrance to Waikiki.State workers with the Aquatics Division who monitor the fish populations in the area say they didn't see a lot of fish near the shore and they took pains to avoid the water."The water looks OK, but you don't know what kind of bacteria and stuff is in there," said Vince Goo, of the state Aquatics Division. The warning signs and the wet weather kept beachgoers away from Magic Island most of the day. Lifeguards worry about the upcoming carnival at Magic Island this weekend, which is expected to draw huge crowds.Just down the way at Ala Moana Beach there were no pollution signs posted.A concern right now is the storm. Lifeguards worry that the currents and winds will blow what is offshore back on to the beaches."(Use) common sense. Ask the lifeguards. We will tell you, 'Personally I wouldn't swim,' but as of right now it is open and it is considered safe to swim," lifeguard Helene Phillips said. That could change soon. State health officials said that when water samples were collected on Monday, crews noticed an odor around the surf breaks. The state said it tested from Point Panic to just past the Sheraton Hotel in Waikiki. It is waiting on the latest test results. Previous Stories:
