Cayetano Visits Ehime Maru Home Port
Governor Meets With Victims' Relatives
UWAJIMA, Japan -- Gov. Ben Cayetano visited the home port of the sunken Japanese fishing vessel Ehime Maru this week, meeting with the relatives of some of the nine sailors who were killed when the ship sank off the coast of Oahu.
The Ehime Maru was home-ported in the coastal city of Uwajima. The fishing trawler was sunk when the submarine USS Greeneville surfaced beneath the ship Feb. 9.
"Many of our people trace their roots back to the Japanese mainland," Cayetano said. "So when the Ehime Maru sank, we were all very sad."
Cayetano was accompanied on his trip by a chorus from the Kamehameha Schools, which performed songs in tribute to the Ehime Maru crew.
