Government Investigates Boat Collision With WhalePOSTED: 6:06 pm HST March 10, 2006 HONOLULU -- The federal government is investigating a Maui whale watching boat that wounded a baby humpback on Thursday.The 65-foot tour boat Ocean Spirit was taken to dry dock at Barbers Point on Oahu for repairs.The Pacific Whale Foundation said there were about 70 school children on board in Maalaea Bay when the baby whale and its mother surfaced directly under the boat.The calf was bleeding, possibly cut by the propeller.The captain called federal biologists who said the calf was injured, but appeared to be swimming normally.Federal law requires boats to stay 100 yards away from whales.
