Honolulu officials have identified a man who died after being run over by a pickup truck in Honolulu Tuesday.
The man was 70-year-old Dexter Mateo.
Police say the crash happened just before 10 a.m. off Vineyard Avenue.
A woman was heading to pick up a family member in the area. When she turned onto Pua Lane, she decided to reverse into a parking spot. At the same time, police say a man in his 70s was walking in the roadway.
The driver apparently didn't see the man and backed over him.
“I heard a loud thump,” said witness Wayne Goodwin. “I thought something had fell, like a fence post or rubbish can and then I heard scream for help. So, I asked my mother in law to watch my son while I came out to investigate into the driveway. That’s when I saw the truck in front of the victim and the two people asking for help and calling 911.”
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Police say neither speed nor alcohol were factors in this accident.
