Aloha Stadium Could Become Single Sport FacilityPOSTED: 5:51 pm HST February 14,
2006 HONOLULU -- When it was opened in 1975, Aloha Stadium was touted as an engineering marvel with its stands capable of being moved for football or baseball, but more than 30 years later, it's getting harder and harder to do that. The stadium may be left in one configuration, permanently, reported KITV's Ben Gutierrez.Aloha Stadium is in its football configuration now, but crews were busy stripping the field and bringing in air compressors to lift the stands, a process that gets dicier each time it's done. Most of the equipment is worn out because of obsolescence, and because of that, reliability goes down. So from one move to the next, it's hard to predict what kinds of problems might happen during the move. It's become so unpredictable, the Stadium Authority is considering leaving the stadium in one configuration permanently.Football brings in close to 500,000 fans each year, versus baseball, which is lucky to get 6,000. As a revenue-generating source, football is the way to go right now.The stadium has to be changed to the baseball configuration for next Monday's Great Aloha Run, which allows finishing runners to get out of the stadium quickly.Stadium crews have to move four sections, each weighing 4 million pounds. Skybridges also have to be moved. Each one weighs 90 tons.Moving the entire stadium takes about four days. Repairing the stadium would cost $129 million. The Stadium Authority may decide on one configuration next week. Copyright 2006 by TheHawaiiChannel.com All rights reserved.
