Hawaii Prepares To Choose Design For Commemorative QuarterPOSTED: 4:32 pm HST February 14,
2006 HONOLULU -- Hawaii is getting ready to have the U.S. Mint make the state commemorative quarter.Gov. Linda Lingle on Tuesday signed an order to form the commission that will help select, develop and recommend a design for Hawaii's quarter.People in Hawaii will have the opportunity to give their own ideas on what should be on our quarter.Other states have picked everything from cows to flowers. The governor will select the final design. The diversity of ideas here will make that difficult, she said."I have to choose just one that will represent the entire state and I have to tell you, I am not looking forward to having to chose just one. I can't imagine right now, standing here, just what that might be," Lingle said. She said she expects the Hawaii commemorative coin to be the most collected in the series because it completes the set. Hawaii's coin is the last in the series because Hawaii was the last state to enter the union. It is scheduled to be released in 2008.Residents can give their thoughts on what should be on the coin at the coin commission's Web site. The commission said that residents must also write why they think the image they suggest is important. The commission said the best coin designs are the least busy.
