Kauai Mayor Calls For Police Chief To Step Down

POSTED: 8:51 am HST January 31, 2006

Kauai's mayor wants the island's police chief removed.

Police Chief K.C. Lum is under fire from the police union and community leaders, who say his mismanagement has caused a morale crisis and weakened Kauai police officers' ability to fight crime.

The FBI has also been investigating the department.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste asked Lum to resign on Monday morning and when Lum refused the mayor asked the police commission chairwoman to remove the chief as soon as possible, according to sources.

Lum did not return phone calls from KITV on Monday.

The mayor is scheduled to make a statement on Tuesday.
