A baby who survived in his mother's womb when she was severely beaten is nearly ready to leave the hospital, according to medical officials.

Josiah Fay is 1 month old. His mother, Sarah Fay, was taken off life support the day her baby was born.

The baby's father, Marwann Jackson, severely beat Sarah Fay the day after Thanksgiving, police said. He's awaiting trial on murder charges.

Michael Fay, Sarah's brother, arrived in Hawaii on Thursday. He and his wife are adopting Josiah Fay and plan to take him home to Colorado next week.

Sarah Fay's older children are now living with their father in California.

The family released a statement saying Josiah is breathing on his own, drinking from a bottle and able to regulate his own body temperature.
