A high-surf warning is in effect until 4 pm Saturday for the north and west facing shores of all islands, except Lanai.

North shore waves could reach 25- to 35-foot face heights by Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Waves on the west shore are forecast to peak at 15- to 25-foot face heights. Waves on the Kona coast of the Big Island are expected to peak at 8- to 12-foot face heights.

On the Big Island, north shores are under a high surf advisory for 10-15 foot face waves.

Ocean safety officials on Kauai told KITV 4 News they are strongly advising people not to go into the water along north and west beaches because of the big waves. On Oahu, lifeguards reported all North Shore beaches were still open as of 9 a.m., with big waves (about 20-foot faces) and clean conditions.

Forecasters are expecting the northwest swell to peak late Friday afternoon or night, and then subside on Saturday.
